Just wondering on some opinions on getting this game as I am really interested in it. My question should I get it on the vita on get it on the ps1 as I can play it on my ps2. Im just worried on the vita that there would be slow downs or sound issues from the port of the game.
(If I'm not posting in the right subreddit please direct me to the right one, thank you!)Also nostalgic goggles aside, how does this game match up in term of the now a days jrpg like p4g, bravely default, xenoblade, etc, in terms of story and gameplay?. The Download version will often be exactly same the PS1 Disk. In the Case of some games, they'll use the Later Version. You have the Directors Cut version of RE1 in the PSN store, but not the Orignal version. (Guess which versions's sound track I hate.)You can play almost all download PS1 titles on a PS3. Most PS1 titles should work on a PSTV as it's basicly a Vita plugged in to a TV.I've both a (reprint) Disk and Download versions of European English version of FF9, I don't see any differences between either version other than my PSP/PSV/PS3 doesn't sound like it's going take off everytime there's a battle.
The European versions of most Square games of that era have a clear window boxed effect and as with all European PS1 games ran at 50Hz, unlike most games today, both are reflected in the download version. The PS1 disk will run the risk of getting Damaged, and unplayable, while the download titles's DRM may limit you from playing the game. For what it's worth, Xenogears is my all time favorite game and it runs great on the Vita.plus you've got portability! That being said, I'm sure I've put this game on a pedestal, but I'll try to be grounded with my opinion.Imo Xenogears has the deepest and most interesting story of the games you listed (haven't played P4G yet).

Bravely Default is a newer favorite of mine, but it's different.this feels much more like a classic FF than anything else. Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii) was OK, but not quite the epic sci-fi focused story and setting that drove Xenogears and Xenosaga, aside from the ending, which felt forced.
Xenoblade Chronicles X (Wii U), ties in to the themes of Xenogears / Xenosaga better, or at least with a better approach, despite weaker character development. Regardless of the Xeno game, they all seem to try and tackle the same question; 'What does it mean to be human and what is our place/role in the universe?' If you've already played through and enjoyed one of the others, I suspect you'd like Xenogears.
I would echo this sentiment as well, Xenogears is one of my favorite games of all time, but it definitely is a flawed masterpiece. The story tackles topics that most games don't even dare to go near, and it's a shame we don't get more games like Xenogears instead of the flood of moe girl harem garbage. Most elements hold up extremely well, including the sprite graphics and the combat (which is obviously very important in such a long game). Some parts don't hold up as well, like the platforming and random battles, but fortunately, most of the platforming is sparce. The cast is creative, (aside from the decision to name the protagonist Fei Fong Wong ) but it includes a desert pirate, ripoff Blanka, and a Furby. Xenogears went through some development hell due to budget cuts, so there are some things that feel a bit odd in the pacing and explanation, but everything is comprehensible. So, there's one major thing (IMO) that's not being mentioned here.
Performance/how the game holds up/etc. All aside, there's a part in Xenogears where you can actually play sort of a multiplayer arena thing that I loved to play with friends (you'll know it when you see it) and I'm fairly sure you can't play the multiplayer version of it on portable. If that's not something that bothers you then I'd go for the portable version simply because I personally believe JRPGs are just much better on the go, especially with sleep functionality.
